not just another item on the menu

Often the life of faith is thought of as a menu of qualities that can be chosen for life. Like a visit to a favorite restaurant many look over the list and find what seems appealing and profitable. Some choose compassion while others choose wisdom. Some go so far as sacrifice or even self-control.

There is one however that is not a menu favorite. Few choose it. It is the lowly quality of humility. That quality that brings me to a place of brokenness, honesty about my life, and vulnerability. It brings to a place where I put others’ needs above my own and am willing to do the most menial of tasks out of love for Christ and others.

In reality, this quality is far more than an item on the menu of faith. It is an menu essential. You cannot enjoy all that Christ offers without constant of humility.

Twice in the New Testament we find these words, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” In other words, the favor, life, and experience of knowing God awaits on the other side of humility. It is the path to all the things that God has for our life. Without humility there is no life.

Quite a startling reality.

There is no wisdom until we recognize we have none. There is no forgiveness until we recognize we need it. There is no love until we realize we don’t deserve it. There is no grace until we’re honest about our failures.

There awaits for those whose hearts are humble a treasure of grace, favor, and hope. In humility their heart is forever changed; they place themselves last and gain the treasure of Christ being first in their life.
